Varsity Beats
Varsity Beats is a computer-based music production program. Using the
latest virtual studio software any student is able to compose and produce
his/her own original songs within weeks. Students can work independently,
with other students in the group, or collaborate online with a participant
at another Varsity Beats site. Varsity Beats can be used as a combination
music and technology class in a school’s course of study, as a popular
extra-curricular activity, a supplement to an existing music class, or
as an engaging activity at camps and youth organizations. Participants
find Varsity Beats particularly rewarding because students produce their
own songs, a tangible product that can be burned to CDs and posted on
the World Wide Web.
Language, Music, and Culture
Language, Music, and Culture is a truly interdisciplinary academic course.
Students use music appreciation and production as a springboard to study
subjects across the curriculum including Reading, Writing, Literature,
World Cultures, Physics, Sociology and American History. Students also
gain valuable computer literacy skills by using technology to research,
compose, and present multi-media research projects. This engaging curriculum
has been successful in helping students of all levels build valuable work
place and college preparatory skills. Language, Music, and Culture makes
an excellent elective course because it is both very popular and highly
educational. Its interdisciplinary nature and extensive use of technology
also make it flexible and able to fulfill multiple requirements for different
students in one dynamic and engaging course.
Rhythm and Rhyme
Rhythm and Rhyme combines two creative endeavors that have always been
a natural pair. It builds on the music production activities of Varsity
Beats by adding poetry and lyric workshops. Students not only create their
own music but also write creatively then record their poetry or lyrics.
Students may choose to record their music and poetry separately or, record
their poetry over their songs, songs of their peers, or sound effects
and musical textures. Check out the mp3s from The Neighborhood House on
the “Sites and Sounds” page
for examples of student projects.
