Harmonic Frequency Institute began in 1999 when public school teacher
Jonathan Kalafer shared the music production software loaded on
his laptop with his students. Their enthusiastic response and prolific
work prompted him to establish workshops and provide regular access
to this new “virtual studio” music-production software.
Since then he has been dedicated to implementing engaging and effective
computer-based music production programs through Harmonic Frequency
Institute. Harmonic Frequency Institute is dedicated to the fight
to keep music in schools. Our mission is to design and implement
educational music programming that utilizes cutting edge technology
and innovative approaches to keep music in schools where it belongs.
Harmonic Frequency Institute works toward its mission
primarily by providing students with instruction and access to the
latest “virtual studio” software. This software translates
music into a new incredibly accessible visual language that empowers
students to quickly become composers and producers of professional
sounding music. Because of this accessibility, the programs are
extremely effective in building self-esteem while simultaneously
developing crucial computer and academic skills. In Harmonic Frequency
Institute programming students create tangible products of their
progress; including CDs of their own songs, creative writing, and
multimedia presentations designed to effectively inform about assigned
research topics. You can hear the results of Harmonic Frequency’s
work for your self, please take a little time and listen to some
examples of student productivity on www.harmonicfrequency.com’s
Radio feature, or browse the Sites and Sounds page for individual
selections.
All of the songs on this website were conceived, composed
and produced by the young people participating in Harmonic Frequency
Institute programming.
